Salmon Arm Female Silvertips Midget team

The Salmon Arm Female Silvertips midget team ventured off to Ponoka, Alberta last weekend January 6-8 taking part in the Lacoka hockey tournament.

The Silvertips first match up was early Saturday morning against the Airdrie Lightning who were highly motivated after losing to the Tips in the Calgary Wickfest back in November. The Tips got on the board in the first on a goal by Wynter Vanderveen and assisted by Teagan Webster-Locke and Brooklyn Davidson. Airdrie responded with two quick goals to end the first period 2-1. Airdrie scored three more in the third to take the game 5-1. The Tips were outshot 33-17 and the score could have gotten out of hand if not for the saves made by game MVP Taylor Thomlinson.

The Tips entered their second game Saturday evening against the Leduc Roughnecks by scoring five goals in the first to take a commanding 5-0 lead. Three more goals for each team the rest of the way resulted in an 8-3 score. The Tips were led by game MVP Sarah Whitehead with 2 goals and an assist. Players with a goal and an assist were Chelsea Marshall, Carly Southam, and Cassidy Marshall. Other goals were scored by Marlea Best, Ava Wutke, and Schannie Watson. Kirsten Konge lead the way with five assists with Courtney Graves, Teagan Webster-Locke, and Haylee Gosselin also supplying helpers. The Tips outshot Leduc 40-11. The win catapulted the Tips into the "B" Championship Final against the host team Lacoka Warriors.

Battling cold and flu sickness all weekend, the Tips arrived Sunday afternoon to play the host team Lacoka Warriors. No score after one with the Tips being outshot 14 to 2. Again no goals in the second frame with the Tips being outshot 17 to 3. Despite the lopsided 31 to 5 difference in shots the Tips showed a lot of poise and heart. The Tips were rewarded by their efforts five minutes into the third period on a goal scored by Ava Wutke, a quick release from the goalie's right side. The goal was enabled by an assist from Sarah Whitehead. The Warriors responded four minutes later on the power play pouncing on a rebound from a slapshot from the point. This set the stage for Cassidy Marshall to score the Tips second goal with the helper from Chelsea Marshall. Scoring from the exact same spot as the opener, both were reminiscent of the "golden goal" scored by Sidney Crosby in the 2010 Winter Olympics. The Tips held on for the 2-1 win and earn the "B" championship. Despite being outshot a total of 36-10, it was deemed one of the Tips best efforts of the season. The game MVP Taylor Thomlinson led the way stopping an astounding 35 shots.

The Tips returned home later that night and look forward to building on this tournament success when playoffs begin February 10-12, 2017.
